PRP injections for hair loss has been found to be an effective treatment especially when used in combination with other treatment modalities such as Minoxidil, Propecia (in men), and laser light therapy.  I don't like telling patients it will prevent hair loss as you can only slow things down, hopefully dramatically.  Often times, PRP will also cause new hair to grow as long as you begin the injections early on in the hair loss process.  Despite hair regrowth and "hair loss prevention" you may eventually notice a gradual thinning of your hair over time.  This is not a reason not to have PRP injections as some people do stop losing their hair and even if you don't you can delay the hair loss process by many years delaying the need for hair transplantation.

No doubt about it, Rogaine is a very useful product. There is no other medication that stimulates hair growth like it that is available over the counter. Alongside Propecia , it is one of the few proven hair loss treatments (and FDA approved). The only thing we don’t like about it is that Rogaine is directed to be used twice daily. Using it twice daily is a pain in the ass. If you shower once daily like most of us, that means in the morning or at night you’ll have to apply Rogaine again. It is much easier to apply Rogaine to dry hair if you have a shaved head or very short hair. For those with long hair you have to part your hair with a comb to really access and massage it into the scalp.

Because ketoconazole seems to work quickly (if at all) when applied topically  compared to  other DHT inhibitors such as Propecia, it is suspected that ketoconazole may combat alopecia due to it’s  sebum removal properties.   Sebum is a fatty substance that accumulates around the hair follicles in the scalp.     It has been speculated that the removal of sebum may help  unclog the hair follicle (similarly to unclogging a drain), improving blood supply and exposing it to more nutrition.   Topical ketoconazole is known for removing and reducing  sebum deposits.

Although there are reports of Propecia causing an initial "shedding" phase, this is not something that I have seen in my patients. In some patients, Propecia may not affect the overall hair loss trajectory, and this could explain the shedding phenomenon (they simply lost hair that would have fallen out even without Propecia). In other patients, Propecia can be highly effective at stopping hair loss or even increasing hair mass over time. Patients should generally be encouraged to give Propecia a trial for a full 12 months (as long as they are not experiencing any side effects) before giving up.  2-3 months is simply not enough time to see a noticeable effect. As always, a consultation with a fellowship-trained hair restoration surgeon is recommended in order to obtain an individualized treatment plan.
